How To Choose The Right Products Based On Your Hair Type

We’ve all been there. A friend told us about a moisturizer that she tried that worked miracles for her hair. Or a celebrity comes out with a hair care line and their conditioner is supposed to be God’s gift to hair care. So what do we do? We go out, spend our hard earned bag investing into these products with the highest expectations only to be disappointed. I mean really... Are these celebrities faking their reviews online? But why would your girl lie about the moisturizer she tried?

Chances are, neither were being misleading. The product just didn’t work for YOUR hair. That’s right… Conditioner and moisturizers are not one size fits all. In order to get the best results, you’ll need to pick the products that will work for your hair.

So how do we know which moisturizers and conditioners will work for our hair, and which ones will not. First you’ll want to know your hair porosity.

Hair porosity refers to how well your hair is able to absorb and hold moisture. Although it can be affected by genetics, the amount of processing your hair has “endured” with heat treatments and various chemicals can also play a part in your current hair porosity. Hair porosity is separated into three different categories: low porosity, medium porosity, and high porosity.

Finding out your hair porosity is fairly simple. You will perform a simple float test. In order to perform the float test, you just follow these steps:

  1. Take a bowl and fill with room temperature water. (Bowls that are see-through may give you a better visual of the results.)
  2. Take a few loose hair from your comb or brush and drop them into the bowl of water.
  3. Wait 3-4 minutes for results and observe. If your hair floats, you have low porosity. If your hair sinks to the bottom of the bowl, you have high porosity. If your hair partially sinks, that’s medium porosity.

Now that you know your hair porosity, you can choose the moisturizer and conditioners that will work best for your hair.

LOW POROSITY

Hair with low porosity is what most would consider healthy hair and it’s usually very shiny. Low porosity hair repels moisture (that’s why it floats) and is hard to process with chemicals. If you have low porosity hair, you will want to stick with low protein conditioners that are rich in humectants such as honey or glycerin. When choosing a moisturizer, you should opt for a moisturizer that is rich in emollients such as shea butter, coconut oil, or jojoba oil. When choosing a moisturizer using a lighter liquid based products such as Kiss Me Moisturizer & Quench Me Leave In Conditioner will not leave your hair feeling heavy or greasy.

MEDIUM POROSITY

Hair with medium porosity usually requires the least maintenance as it tends to hold styles, chemicals treatments and hair color the longest. You can do protein rich deep conditioners occasionally, but proteins should not be included in your daily regimen. Tease Me Co Wash and Detangler would work well with your medium porosity hair because it is rich in emollients that are beneficial to medium porosity hair without overextending it which can increase your porosity.

HIGH POROSITY

Although hair with high porosity can be inherited, it is usually the result of damage from chemical processing, rough treatment or the lack of any treatment over an extended period of time. High porosity hair has a high number of gaps (or pores) that allows too much moisture into your hair that causes it to frizz or tangle more easily. You should stick with conditioners that contain anti-humectants, especially if you live in a place that tends to get humid often to protect your hair from further damage. Because high porosity hair can also lose moisture quickly because of the pores, you want to be sure to use leave-in conditioners, moisturizers and sealers. Tingle Me T-Tree Conditioner works great with high porosity hair because it contains essentials and juices that can help fill in those pores to prevent your from becoming over moisturized or losing moisture too quickly.
